Doll Making in
Cold Porcelain and Porcelain
I specialize in custom dolls. I work by picture of dress designs and special details such as hair style, skin tone and make-up and any other specifications that clients may have.
I make dolls in porcelain out of mold reproduction and the main part of my artistry in doll making is reflected on the dresses which are completely hand crafted in cold porcelain.
I begin the process by studying the dress and small details, then I brake down the design by sketching piece by piece and putting the idea together. I also have to study the fabric used and then try my best to achieve that look with the cold porcelain, and also depending if is lace work or embroidery, which I carefully have to hand craft with the use of small instruments.
The process of building the dress starts. The doll is place on a cone which is the base for the skirt, or depending if sited or one of my favorite pieces with one leg out with open skirt.
It is very time consuming, since some dresses are heavier than others and I have to place layers and layers of C.P. to achieve volume and length and work on the details as I work from the bottom to the top. Sometimes it takes me one week or less to build the whole dress because C.P. dries from the outside to inside, (it is a very tricky material but it is wonderful) and be also careful because it tends to shrink and that is a big problem....
When most of it is dry, the fun part start, which is the painting process. Getting the right color and painting details is still get me so excited.
Another part very important is creating miniature details such as jewelry, umbrellas, hats, working in the hair and making the flowers, which are one of my favorite to work with, creating tiny petals and then putting them together to form a particular flower depending on what I'm working with.
The process of doll making in cold porcelain is really amazing and since I have no formal training in arts or sculpting, it really surprises me a lot when I accomplish a project
Satin embroidery bridal gown, adorned with miniature Baby Breath, and on each of them a tiny pearl. Her bouquet has beautiful white roses with rains of pearls. The best detail of the dress is a big bow in the back with long satin ribbon and a combination of both flowers..
